What is VPS Hosting and Who Can Profit From it the Most?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual operating system located inside a parent (physical) server.
One server can house several VPS instances. These are separated from each other but still share the server’s total pool of resources.
The software that divides the VPS instances and manages the server’s resources is called “hypervisor“.
What Type of Websites Can Profit the Most From VPS?
VPS is often a great option for:
#1- Companies That Have Outgrown Their Shared Hosting
Once you get to a certain traffic level, your shared hosting will not be able to keep up.
Some of the “symptoms” of this will be:
an increase in bounce rate on your site (because it’s loading slower than molasses in January);
your website average loading time rises across the board;
You experience downtime and lots of it.
Rather than let poor UX (user experience) tank your site, invest in a high quality VPS and have peace of mind knowing your online business can continue to grow uninterrupted.
#2- Companies Handling Sensitive User Data
Experiencing a data breach can destroy a business’s reputation.
Luckily, going with VPS hosting and choosing a reliable provider (like Liquid Web) will make your data absolutely safe and secure from threats.
#3- Big Websites Who Need Lots of Firepower
VPS hosting is an excellent choice for companies who’re somewhere in the middle stage of their growth. They get so much traffic that even the best shared hosting won’t cut it.
But they don’t get so much as to warrant renting an entire dedicated server for themselves.
What Type of Websites Should NOT Pick VPS Hosting?
Some websites should better steer clear of VPS hosting as it won’t be worth it for them.
#1- Companies on a Budget
While not as expensive as renting an entire dedicated server, VPS costs significantly more compared to shared hosting.
So obviously, if you can’t afford it, or even if you barely can, you’re better off with purchasing quality managed WordPress hosting and investing the rest of your money back into growing your business.
#2- Businesses With Zero Technical Skills
If you can’t afford to pay someone to mange your hosting and you don’t have the time or knowledge to do it yourself, then don’t go for VPS hosting.
Alternatively, you can go for Liquid Web’s managed VPS hosting. In managed hosting they take care of everything (maintenance, troubleshooting, software installs, spam and virus protection…) so you can take care of growing your business.
#3- Big Websites
By big I mean BIG. I’m talking enterprise-level websites that get millions of visitors per month.
Those giants need to get dedicated hosting, but the good news (for them) is that they can easily afford it 🙂

Liquid Web VPS Hosting Pros and Cons
Liquid Web offer same of the best VPS hosting solutions in the industry, but there are ways to make it even better.
Sigh… Nothing’s ever perfect in this world 🙂
a) VPS Hosting is cheaper than dedicated– while more expensive than shared hosting or managed WordPress hosting, VPS is also significantly cheaper that dedicated hosting.
At Liquid Web, the cheapest dedicated server plans start at $199, while the most expensive VPS plan (16GB RAM) is $189/mo and $129/mo when payed in yearly installments.
b) Fast setup- Opposite to dedicated hosting, where the whole server first has to be assembled and installed, VPS is much faster to setup.
It typically takes the Liquid Web crew anywhere from 15m-25m (Linux OS) and 1h-2h-(Windows) to set it up for you.
c) Highly scalable and customizable- When you host with Liquid Web you’ll be able to both upgrade and downgrade your VPS based on your site’s current needs, and you won’t ever pay for resources that you didn’t use.
d) You have lots more control- When you choose a VPS to host your site, you’ll get lots more control than with basic shared hosting.
You’ll have root access and the ability to use scripts that may not be allowed in the shared hosting environment.
e) Support is excellent- you typically get the the same level of support as you would on shared or managed WordPress plans.
Instead the Liquid Web professional crew will do it for you.
g) VPS are easily upgradable- Since you’ll be using just a part of the main server’s total resources, you’ll always be able to upgrade insanely quickly in case of sudden traffic spikes and surges.
Contrast that with dedicated server, where you’ll have to wait for the hardware component to be installed on the server first, before making full use of it.
And by that point it might be too late as the viral traffic spike has already died-down.
h) Liquid Web VPS are fast- In fact a recent study showed that Liquid Web VPS is faster than Amazon, Digital Ocean and Rackspace.
Quite a feat considering that those providers also offer high quality VPS services.
If you’re interested, you can download the study here.
i) Liquid Web has an awesome score on Trustpilot– Liquid Web has a 4.7 rating on Trustpilot, with the majority of reviews being overwhelmingly positive.
a) Not as powerful as dedicated hosting- While VPS blows out of the water regular shared hosting, it also can’t compete with dedicated.
So VPS is a perfect choice for bigger websites; but not for enterprise-level business who’re better off with dedicated hosting.
b) Limitations- Physical server often houses several VPS servers at the same time time. If one of these VPS instances starts consuming too much RAM power or CPU, this will slow down the entire server, meaning your VPS too.
Note: this problem is especially prevalent with low quality VPS hosts who try their best to cram as many websites as possible on a server, hoping than none of them will reach peak performance.
Liquid Web is the opposite and they guarantee optimal performance for your VPS at all times.
c)Require more technical knowledge. Unlike the cloud web hosting account, VPS server requires more technical know-how to manage and maintain them.
Pick the plan you want. For the sake of an example, I’ll choose a 2 GB plan and yearly package because that’s much cheaper. Click on “Order Now”
Second, choose your control panel. You can pick among cPanel, Plesk and InterWorx. Click on the big “Add to Cart” button and proceed.
Thirdly, check your configuration and proceed to checkout.
Fourth, create your Liquid Web account, if you don’t already have one (you probably don’t).
Fifth, go through the page entering the info needed.
Sixth (final step)- choose a payment method and submit your order.
That’s it! Congratulations!
You made the right decision 🙂
Liquid Web VPS Hosting FAQ- All Your Questions Answered!
I’m very active in the blogging community, and over and over I find this set of questions asked about Liquid Web, and especially about their VPS hosting plans.
They’re popular questions, so why not answer them here?
It’ll make my review better and more comprehensive 😎
What is VPS Hosting?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual operating system located inside a parent (physical) server. One server can house several VPS’s, and these combined share the server’s resources.
The software that separates multiple VPS's and manages the server’s resources is called hypervisor.
Why Choose a VPS Over Any Other Type of Hosting
A VPS gives you a portion of a dedicated server and you have full control of all the resources.
So you won't have to share them with any other website and this ensures optimal performance for your online business.
Also you'll be ensconced in a (virtual) protective shell, in other words- protected from threats that might be attacking other VPS instances on the same server.
Are Liquid Web VPS Plans Managed?
Liquid Web offer both managed and un-managed VPS hosting solutions. Unless you know what you're doing, I recommend managed VPS plans where you'll have a whole team behind your back, solving problems before they even arise.
Which Operating Systems Can I Use? And can I Install My Own OS?
You can use:
Ubuntu – 16.04, 18.04;
Debian 8, 9 and 10;
Windows Server – 2012 and 2016.
No, VPS hosting platform does not allow for installation of custom operating systems.
How Can I Move My Site From Other Hosting Providers?
Ask Liquid Web's helpful support for assistance, and they'll move your site for you. Free of charge of course:)
Can I Upgrade My VPS Hosting Plan?
Yes you can. And it's very easy to do so. What's more, the beauty of Cloud VPS is that you'll be able to downgrade at the push of a button. That way you'll be paying only for the resources you actually spend.
Unlike, for example, with a dedicated server where you pay for the whole server, regardless of how much resource you use.
What's the Difference Between VPS and Dedicated Server?
They differ by price and capabilities. Dedicated server is more robust with much more firepower (and is also much more expensive). But the main difference is that with VPS, you're using a virtual server housed inside a physical server.
While dedicated server hosting lets you use the entire thing all for yourself.
How Many Websites Can I Host on a VPS?
You can host as many as you want. However, you're limited by the amount of resource that's allotted to your site (this depends on the VPS plan you picked).
So if you plan to host many websites, go for the resource-richer plans.
How Long Will it Take to Set up Managed VPS Hosting?
The setup time for a VPS varies depending on which operating system you want. If you are using a Linux based system, you should see your VPS online within 15-30 minutes. If you picked a Windows based server, you will see it live within 1-2 hours.
In Case I Need Help, What's the Support Like at Liquid Web?
Liquid Web boast some of the best support in the entire hosting industry. Whatever problem you encounter, they'll help you solve it 24/7/365.
Do I get a Free CDN With Liquid Web VPS Hosting?
Yes you do. You get CloudFlare for blazing fast site load time.
Concluding my Liquid Web VPS Hosting Review 2020…
There’s no need to shy away from getting VPS hosting for your site.
Your website requires it, and your website deserves the best.
