Another, less known toxic osmium compound is osmium tetrachloride.

However, osmium bullion is exceedingly rare on the market. So far only one company sells pure osmium bullion, in 2.5gr and 1 oz bars.

Is it Possible To Eat Osmium Similar to Eating Gold and Platinum?
No, it’s not possible to safely eat osmium in the way gold and platinum are consumed as food additives. Pure, compact osmium metal is inert and non-toxic, but it readily oxidizes in the presence of air or heat to form osmium tetroxide, a toxic compound you don’t want to inhale or ingest.
Osmium is also a very rare precious metal (only 1-2 tons of osmium are mined in a calendar year). The amount that’s mined mostly goes toward industrial application and not towards food consumption.
Below are examples of edible pure gold and pure platinum products. Similar osmium products don’t exist.


Solid osmium pieces that are ingested won’t harm the body. Because the body can’t digest them. That osmium piece would go through the digestive tract and come out intact, but probably in a need of a good cleaning and polishing.
Particularly large osmium jewelry piece can get stuck inside the bowel and this is then a medical emergency. You don’t want to risk bowel perforation as it’s a serious health problem requiring surgery to fix it.

Is Osmium Radioactive, Yes or No?

Yes, osmium is technically radioactive, but for all practical purposes it’s considered a nonradioactive precious metal.
It’s because osmium’s primary naturally occurring isotopes are stable and not dangerous to human health. The natural osmium found on Earth consists of seven isotopes. Six of these are stable, while the seventh, osmium-186, has a half life of 2 quadrillion years making it stable and non-radioactive under normal circumstances.
This osmium isotope is primarily used in scientific research, particularly in nuclear physics and geological dating.

Other, less common isotopes of osmium exist and these are radioactive and dangerous to human health.
Radioactive isotopes from the osmium group are listed below.
- Osmium- 191. Osmium-191 is a radioactive osmium isotope used to produce iridium-191m for medical imaging. It acts as a radionuclide generator, with the parent isotope (half-life of about 15.4 days) decaying into the medically useful daughter iridium isotope with half-life of about 4.96 seconds. This short-lived iridium is used for diagnostic tests, such as radionuclide angiocardiography, to visualize blood flow in the heart.
- Osmium- 193. Osmium 193 has a half-life of about 30.11 hours and is used in nuclear research to study the properties of iridium-193 (a stable isotope).
