Being an online app, Grammarly uses artificial intelligence to detect errors in your text and gives you suggestions to make your writing better.

Here are some of the features you get from the Grammarly Chrome extension.

  • Spelling, punctuation, and grammar: Just like the spellchecker in your favorite text editor, this feature helps detect all the basic spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.
  • Paragraphing: Grammarly will offer suggestions on how to make your paragraphs more readable.
  • Tone: This is a premium feature, and in Gmail specifically, when your email text reaches 121 characters, an automatic tone detector is activated. The tone detector uses more than 40 different tones.
  • Wordy and unclear phrases: This feature focuses on providing suggestions to make long and/or complicated sentences clearer and more concise.
  • Citations: If you’re writing academic or professional content, this feature is very important for you. It detects text that you might have copied from somewhere, then creates citations in APA, Chicago, and MLA styles.
  • Plagiarism: Grammarly’s plagiarism software does a great job by checking your writing against 16 billion web pages.

If your content has words in other languages or acronyms, this feature can be a big time saver during your writing.

So if you have an incorrectly flagged word in your content, hover over it, and under the suggestion presented, you should see the option of “Add to dictionary”. Click on it.

If it’s a word that you don’t want to add to the dictionary, you can choose to “Dismiss” the error altogether.

If you’re using Grammarly’s online editor, you can also set goals that Grammarly uses to tailor writing suggestions for you. Goals can be based on Audience (General, Knowledgeable, and Expert), Formality (Informal, Neutral, and Formal), and Intent (Inform, Describe, Convince, and Tell A Story)

The other option is Domain (Academic, Business, General, Email, Casual, and Creative). Please note that this option is available on Premium accounts only.

Grammarly for Chrome Benefits and Drawbacks

Benefits of Using Grammarly Extension With Google Chrome

The greatest bright side of Grammarly is its absurd ease of use. It’s only a matter of installing the extension and activating it.

Grammarly extension for Chrome works on every website and error detections are automatic as you type your text.

It is also important to note that Grammarly’s suggestions are nearly 100% accurate.

Drawbacks of Using Grammarly Extension on Google Chrome

The Grammarly for Chrome extension is an awesome tool for bloggers and everyone else. However, even though it has some incredible benefits, there are some drawbacks to it.

First, Grammarly only supports English. That means any non-English words, acronyms, or industry-specific terms will be flagged as errors.

Earlier, I mentioned how Grammarly suggestions are nearly 100% accurate, but sometimes they can be totally unreliable.

For example, a sentence like “I just am was asking to play with you’re employees.” will pass as correct in Grammarly Online Editor. It completely ignores how messed up the sentence is.

In that statement, the words “just”, and “was”, are flagged under Tone, and Redundant words. Of course, you can only be able to edit that if you have a premium account.

Then in Gmail, only the word “just” is flagged. The suggestion given is to rephrase by deleting the word.

Only after deleting “just” does Grammarly flag the grammatical error in “you’re”.

Even after the suggested corrections, the sentence still remains a grammatical disaster.

Grammarly is not 100% perfect

Troubleshooting Grammarly for Chrome

Sometimes even after installing Grammarly, you may not see the Grammarly icon on your browser. If that happens, here are some tips to fix that.

  • Close and reopen Chrome. 90% of extension issues are fixed by just closing and reopening the Chrome browser.
  • Go to chrome://extensions, and confirm that the extension is enabled. Sometimes an extension is installed but not enabled. Disabled extension icons don’t show in the browser for use.

With any of the fixes above, you should now have your green Grammarly icon in the top-right corner of your browser.

For the best experience, make sure you log in to your account. If you don’t have an account, you can easily create one.
