First, open your Chrome browser and search in Google “Grammarly extension for Chrome”. Click on the first result.
Second, click the “add to Chrome” button.
Third, upon clicking the button you will end up on the Grammarly extension page within the Chrome web store.
Then just click the install button on the right. In the image below you can see it says “remove Grammarly from Chrome”, but that is because I already use Grammarly with my Chrome browser.

How to use Grammarly for Chrome?
Now that you’ve installed Grammarly for Chrome and you know exactly what it does, the next thing you need to know is how to actually use the extension.
At this point, you should be able to see a green circle icon on the top-right side of the address toolbar.
To be sure that Grammarly for Chrome is active, click on the green Grammarly icon, and a dropdown box should appear.
Whichever website you visit through your Chrome browser, Grammarly extension will detect and underline errors in any text box you type and on most websites. It will also offer spelling and grammar suggestions to improve your text.
If you want to turn Grammarly Off on a specific website, simply click on the green Grammarly icon and toggle to “OFF” where it says “Check for writing suggestions on…”
To turn it back on, click on the icon again, and toggle to “ON”
When a text is underlined, hover over it and a suggestion popup will show. If you agree with the suggestion, simply click on the suggestion and the underlined mistake will be automatically corrected.
In the image above, the misspelling of “putting” is detected and underlined. To correct it, hover over “puting” and click on the right suggestion “putting” to apply the correction automatically.
With a longer piece of content, I suggest you use the Grammarly app editor within your browser. That way Grammarly will show you all the mistakes in a sidebar. This gives you the ability to see all the errors at a glance as you edit your content.
If you’re wondering how to use Grammarly in your Gmail, it’s practically the same process. Here is what the above example would look like inside your Gmail.
Note that in spelling suggestions, Grammarly offers you the ability to add new words to the dictionary.
If your content has words in other languages or acronyms, this feature can be a big time saver during your writing.
So if you have an incorrectly flagged word in your content, hover over it, and under the suggestion presented, you should see the option of “Add to dictionary”. Click on it.
If it’s a word that you don’t want to add to the dictionary, you can choose to “Dismiss” the error altogether.

The Grammarly for Chrome extension is an awesome tool for bloggers and everyone else. However, even though it has some incredible benefits, there are some drawbacks to it.
First, Grammarly only supports English. That means any non-English words, acronyms, or industry-specific terms will be flagged as errors.
Earlier, I mentioned how Grammarly suggestions are nearly 100% accurate, but sometimes they can be totally unreliable.
For example, a sentence like “I just am was asking to play with you’re employees.” will pass as correct in Grammarly Online Editor. It completely ignores how messed up the sentence is.
In that statement, the words “just”, and “was”, are flagged under Tone, and Redundant words. Of course, you can only be able to edit that if you have a premium account.
Then in Gmail, only the word “just” is flagged. The suggestion given is to rephrase by deleting the word.
Only after deleting “just” does Grammarly flag the grammatical error in “you’re”.
Even after the suggested corrections, the sentence still remains a grammatical disaster.
Troubleshooting Grammarly for Chrome
Sometimes even after installing Grammarly, you may not see the Grammarly icon on your browser. If that happens, here are some tips to fix that.
- Close and reopen Chrome. 90% of extension issues are fixed by just closing and reopening the Chrome browser.
- Go to chrome://extensions, and confirm that the extension is enabled. Sometimes an extension is installed but not enabled. Disabled extension icons don’t show in the browser for use.
