The average American reads at a 7th- to 8th-grade level, which is equivalent to a readability level for people aged 12 to 14 years old.
This level is used as a benchmark in the medical industry for written guidelines, meaning that publication tend to write at this level just so that most Americans can understand what they’re reading.
Obviously, average reading levels greatly vary depending on a person’s age and educational background.
Typically, older and more educated Americans will have higher reading comprehension than school children, students and young adults.
For example, almost 70% of low-income fourth graders in the US cannot read at a basic level.
Note: reading levels for African Americans are significantly lower than for white Americans
- Only 12% of Black males are proficient in reading by 8th grade.
- In 2019, only 17% of Black 12th graders were proficient in reading.
- 85% of Black students in the U.S. lack proficiency in reading skills.
Here are the reading levels of Hispanic Americans:
- The Hispanic illiteracy rate is between 11.9% and 56%, which is higher than the rate for White or Black populations.
- In 2017, the average reading score for Hispanic students was 255, which was not significantly different from 2015.
- The Hispanic population has made significant educational progress in recent decades, especially among younger age groups. In 2021, 88.5% of Hispanics ages 25 to 29 graduated from high school.

In 2020 only 17% of 13-year-olds said they read every day for fun which is a huge drop from 35% in 1984.
Now, students are supposed to be among the most read part of the population. And yet, 31% of students say they never or hardly ever read for fun.
Finally, a BookTrust survey found that the percentage of children who say they love reading drops with age, from 33% at age 7 to 25% at age 11.

However, reading habits vary by age, gender, and other factors:
