What is SEMrush?
In this post, you will get a basic introduction to SEMrush, understand the marketing tools it offers, and also why you need to start using SEMrush today.
You’ll also learn how to start using SEMrush for free.
Let’s get started!
What is SEMrush?
SEMrush is a robust all-in-one digital marketing toolkit. Companies use SEMrush to run Pay-per-Click (PPC), SEO, content, and social media marketing campaigns.
While SEMrush comes with a lot of valuable features, in this post I’ll mainly focus on SEMrush’s SEO tools.
SEMrush can audit your site and make actionable suggestions that you can use to optimize your pages for better ranking and lead generation.
It can also identify trends in your industry and help you discover valuable keywords that can help you run more profitable campaigns.
Additionally, you get a ton of information on your competitors so you can know exactly what to do to rank better than them.
But enough of the intro, let’s delve deeper into the meat of this post…
5 Reasons Why You Need to Start Using SEMrush Today

Here are 5 reasons why you need to start using SEMrush today. Keep in mind that SEMrush has 55+ tools, but not all will be covered here.
#1- Website Performance Report
One of the most stressful aspects of running an SEO campaign is the time it takes to show results. Google is a fickle search engine and the time it takes for Google to make up its mind is really stressful for the marketer trying to rank.
However, you can use SEMrush to lower that stress to a bare minimum.
SEMrush gives you early data so you can know how your SEO is working.
For example, you can see the traffic result for my site.
SEMrush shows me my traffic exploded this August (400% growth) and I know that before that I did serious SEO and I know what I did, and it’s replicable.
Though don’t expect me to share my SEO secrets just yet 🙂
Within SEMrush you can also get an overview of how a specific page on your site ranks for its target keywords. This helps you to improve your campaigns to rank better and it’s the most valuable part of SEMrush site reporting.
#2- Competitor Analysis
A large part of running an SEO campaign is monitoring and understanding your direct competition. Unless you’re in a really unique industry, there are tens of other businesses doing their best to rank for the same keywords you’re targeting.
When you use SEMrush, you’re able to see exactly what your competitors are doing, so that you can do better and outperform them.
If you’re completely new to SEO, you can actually learn from the information you get about your competition. For example, you can see what keywords are performing well for them, then implement the same keywords in your campaign.
All in all, the better you understand your competitors, the better SEO strategies you’ll create.
#3- Keyword Research
When people search for something online, they use keywords to get relevant results. Using the right keywords o your website will put you in front of your audience, and keyword research and selection are the centers of any successful SEO campaign.
SEMrush will enable you to find those keywords.
You can find valuable keywords by searching for your seed keyword and looking for relevant related phrases the SEMrush suggests (along with key metrics).
Here’s an example: I search for “SEMrush free trial” and here are the related SEMrush trial keywords I can use in my post (linked above).
Another way to use SEMrush to find valuable keywords is to put your competitor’s page inside SEMrush and look at the keyword the page ranks for. And then you will know what keywords to target with your page.
For example, I want to rank my page for the query “SEMrush coupon“. So I created and optimized my page (lust linked to it) based on the data SEMrush showed me.
#4- Stable Traffic Growth
We do SEO to grow our traffic. But, it’s all for nothing if we eventually lose what we get. It’s important to put effort to keep the traffic you have engaged and glued to your page.
SEMrush offers a rank tracker you can use to monitor your keywords for changes ad act proactively when you notice the changes are happening and Google is no longer favoring you.
Note: different SEMrush plans come with different keyword rank tracking quotas.
- Free– 10 keywords;
- Pro– 500 keywords;
- Guru– 1.500 keywords;
- Business– 5000 keywords;
- Custom– negotiable.
#5- Easier Backlink Acquisition
Backlinks improve the authority and trust of your website. The more valuable backlinks you earn from credible and authoritative websites, the more Google trusts you, and the better your rankings.
SEMrush’s backlink tools allow you to see where to earn backlinks, and where your competition is earning backlinks from. This can help you craft a better backlink strategy and a better SEO strategy overall.
SEMrush Backlink tool is the SEMrush tool I use the most.
How Does SEMrush Pull all That Data?
When you use SEMrush, there is a lot of data being presented to you.
But how does all this data get pulled?
SEMrush pulls data in two ways:
First, through the SEMrush search bar. When you type a website’s URL in the search bar, you are provided with all the data they have SEMrush has in their massive database.
Note: SEMrush’s massive data is powered by their proprietary bot (SEMrush bot ) which is crawling the web 24/7, similar to Google-bot.
Second, through creating projects. When you create a project, the pulled data is outside the SEMrush database. Basically, it analyzes your website or your competitor’s properties to give you the insights you need to compete successfully.
What are SEMrush Toolkits?
SEMrush toolkits are basically a combination of several customizable reports and tools to give you a better insight into your campaign.
With toolkits, you have a ton of reports and tools to work with. In most cases, you will not need to use all the reports and tools -and that’s where customization comes in handy.
If you’re new to SEMrush and just starting, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the reports and not know what tool to use.
In such a case, focus on your SEO campaign plan and goals, and what reports and tools can best help you to execute that plan to achieve the goal.
SEMrush offers toolkits for all methods, all you have to do is choose the right ones you think will impact your campaign the most, and monitor your success.
SEMrush Pricing: What Does SEMrush Cost?
SEMrush offers 3 different plans that come with different features accordingly.
Here are the SEMrush plans (check out my full SEMrush pricing guide here):
- Pro ($119.95/month);
- Guru ($229.95/month);
- Business ($449/month);
- Custom (negotiable).
Note: SEMrush pricing model allows you to save 17% off any paid SEMrush plan by purchasing a yearly subscription.
I call it the SEMrush lifetime deal because the 17% discount is inherited every year you renew your subscription.
Want to check out SEMrush before paying? No problem.
You can take advantage of the SEMrush free trial offer to test SEMrush tools before moving on to the paid plan.
Note: There is a 17% discount on all plans if you choose to be billed annually.
All plans come with the core SEMrush SEO tools. In addition to all the features, SEMrush provides you with valuable suggestions on how to improve your website and pages for better ranking.
Is SEMrush Better Than Its Competitors?
There is no doubt SEMrush is one of the best SEO suites in the market. If you’re looking for an all-in-one digital marketing platform, then SEMrush is your answer.
However, some SEMrush competitors are less priced than SEMrush yet they offer the same services.
Why is that?
You need to keep in mind that SEMrush is an all-in-one digital marketing software. While other providers may offer exactly the same features of a SEMrush tool, they don’t offer a full suite.
That means, should you need to execute another plan that needs a different feature, then you’ll have to find another service that does that.
For example, a competitor may only provide website audits ((check out my SEMrush vs Screaming Frog guide) or keyword research (check out my SEMrush vs Long Tail Pro guide) yet your SEO strategy needs additional features like backlink and competitive analysis to be successful.
With SEMrush, everything is in one place. SEMrush is basically the best bang for the buck for SEO tools.
There are also free SEMrush alternatives you can check out, but they really don’t hold a candle to paid SEMrush features.
They’re best avoided unless you’re absolutely strapped for cash. But in that case, the free version of SEMrush is an excellent starting point for you.
