Old Gold IRA Company With 18+ Years in Business
At the time of writing this Goldco review on my website, Goldco have already been in business for a full 18 years and they’re still going strong.
In the gold IRA niche, there are some companies which are only ~5 years old and do awesome work for American savers and investors.
That said, in this niche usually older=better. I say usually because there are always exceptional young companies that however only serve to prove the rule.
With 18 years in the business, Goldco is one of the oldest and best gold IRA companies in the US.
“A+” score on BBB and Excellent Scores on Other Consumer Watchdog Websites
Goldco are a BBB-accredited business with a well-maintained profile and a perfect A+ score. This is another proof of the legitimacy of this company.
They also have thousands of positive customer reviews on popular consumer watchdog websites.
Take a look at their ratings and scores on these platforms (note: these are captured at the moment of writing this review of Goldco Precious Metals).
Consumer Watchdog Websites | Number of reviews | Score/Rating | Number of complaints in the past 12 months |
---|---|---|---|
BBB | 829 reviews | 4.8/5 | None or very few customer complaints |
Trustpilot | 1281 reviews | 4.7/5 | None or very few customer complaints |
ConsumerAffairs | 1685 reviews | 4.8/5 | None or very few customer complaints |
Business Consumer Alliance | 1 review | AAA | None or very few customer complaints |
Trustlink | 254 reviews | 5/5 | None or very few customer complaints |
No Additional Fees. You Only Pay for Storage and Custodian Fees
Goldco have a small initial account step fee, and once you pay it that’s the only payment you’ll make to Goldco directly (not counting the gold and silver purchases you make with them).
The other two fees are custodial fees and bullion storage fees, but the money here goes to services Goldco work with, and not to Goldco themselves.
Click here to go to the section of my Goldco review that talks about Goldco’s fees and pricing.
Customer-friendly Buyback and Refund Policies
Goldco Precious Metals have excellent buyback and refund policies designed to give maximum protection to their customers.
Excellent Customer Service
Goldco have excellent customer service built to support their customers along the way of doing business with this company.
Click here to jump to the part of my Goldco review where I talk about Goldco’s customer support.
Strong Focus on Education
Goldco is not a scam. They’re a legit gold IRA company. One telltale sign of that is that Goldco have a strong focus on educating both their existing and potential customers.
On their website, you’ll find a large helpful blog full of helpful knowledge on precious metals, gold IRAs and economics in general.
Goldco also offer a helpful Wealth Protection Kit which consists of a Printed guide, Audio guide & Video guide, which is plenty of constantly updated info for you to absorb and learn from.
Note: whether you decide to open a gold IRA with Goldco or with another company, always look to see if the company in question is just trying to sell to you, or if they’re also trying to teach you about the pros and cons of investing in gold and silver.
The gold investment companies that try to educate you are almost always legitimate or more legitimate than those just trying to sell to you.
Purchase Gold and Silver Directly From Goldco
Goldco allow you to buy gold and silver bullion outside of your IRA account.
In that case, the precious metals you bought will be shipped to your home (anonymous package and 100% insured during transit) via FedEx.
You can also send the precious metals to your depository of choice;
or your account might qualify for free storage, a service Goldco provides to their customers who fulfil certain criteria.
First-Time Customer Bonuses
Goldco offer bonuses to first-time clients. The bonuses I’m talking about are a complete fee waiver for your first year and up to 10% back on any silver coin purchases (you can get up to $10 000 in free silver).
These bonuses make Goldco unique as most of their competitors don’t offer any freebies to new customers.
Supported By Celebrities
Similar to Augusta Precious Metals who’re supported by Joe Montana, Goldco have the support of Sean Hannity.
Sean is Goldco’s paid ambassador and also one of their satisfied customers.
Goldco Cons (Complaints)
Goldco’s cons and complaints in 2024 are:
- Complaint 1- Limited Refund Options;
- Complaint 2- Limited Payment Options are Available;
- Complaint 3- Hidden Margins (Markup);
- Complaint 4- No Bitcoin IRA Options;
- Complaint 5- Not an Online Gold Dealer;
- Complaint 6- $25 000 Minimum Investment Requirement;
- Complaint 7- No Palladium and Platinum Products;
- Complaint 8- No Mobile App;
- Complaint 9- There is no Pricing of Products on Goldco’s Website;
- Complaint 10- Decent Number of Complaints on BBB
More details about Goldco’s cons and complaints in 2024 are right below.
Complaint 1- Limited Refund Options
Goldco’s refund policy exists, but it leaves much to be desired.
Namely, with Goldco, the only way to get a refund for your precious metals is when said bullion gets stolen or is lost during transport.
In that case, Goldco will either reimburse your money, or they’ll send you replacement bullion of equal worth.
The bottom line is that you can’t request a refund from Goldco, except in some edge cases. Compare that to Augusta Precious Metals’s refund policy where you (as a first-time customer) have 7 days to change your mind and get a full refund.
Learn more about Augusta Precious Metals company by reading my Augusta gold IRA review next.
Complaint 2- Limited Payment Options are Available
Goldce offer very limited payment options when it comes to cash gold and silver purchases. Namely, you can only pay via checks or write transfers.
It’d be great if more payment options were available, for example, PayPal or Bitcoin.
Note: Goldco also let you open a gold IRA account with them. You can fund your gold IRA account by rolling over assets from your existing retirement accounts. For example, 401(k), 403(b), TSP, savings or IRA accounts.
These IRA rollovers don’t incur any tax penalties.
Complaint 3- Hidden Margins (Markup)
Goldco don’t say clearly anywhere on the site what their markup (margin) is on the gold and silver items they stock and sell.
Even though their markup is probably similar to the other gold IRA companies’ it’s still not listed on their website and it’d be great if it was.
Complaint 4- No Bitcoin IRA Options
Goldco is not a Bitcoin IRA company. They’re a strictly gold and silver IRA dealer.
Visit my guide to the best crypto IRA companies next if you’re looking to open a Bitcoin IRA account.
Or read my iTrustCapital review to learn what this excellent crypto IRA company can do for you.
Complaint 5- Not an Online Gold Dealer
Goldco are a precious metals dealer. But they’re not an online gold dealer.
If you want to order gold and silver from Goldco you’ll first need to download their free gold IRA kit and start from there.
Complaint 6- $25 000 Minimum Investment Requirement
Goldco have a $25 000 minimum investment requirement for gold IRA purchases.
$25 000 seems like it’s a lot and for some people it is. But still, $25 000 is just 50% of the minimum investment requirement of Augusta Precious Metals (Augusta is another excellent gold IRA company).
Complaint 7- No Palladium and Platinum Products
Goldco are strictly a gold and silver IRA company, even though both platinum and palladium are IRA-approved precious metals.
This means you’ll need to go to another gold IRA company If you want to fill your gold IRA with platinum/palladium coins and bars.
Note: Goldco are a legit, reputable and trustworthy gold IRA company. If you ask them to supply you with platinum and palladium, you might be positively surprised.
Also, you need to check out Oxford Gold Group if you’re really only interested in getting platinum or palladium bullion as part of your new IRA account, or as physical bullion.
Oxford Gold Group are another very high quality gold IRA company and more important to you, they sell platinum and palladium coins and bars.
Read my Oxford Gold Group review here to learn more about it.
Complaint 8- No Mobile App
Goldco’s website is available on mobile and the site is fully mobile-responsive. However, Goldco don’t have an official app you can install and use on your mobile device.
This is a genuine complaint for some people.
Complaint 9- There is no Pricing of Products on Goldco’s Website
Goldco as a company doesn’t show you the price of their products directly on their website. Instead, to learn the price of the gold and silver items they stock you need to download their free gold IRA kit and then get in touch with one of the company’s sales agents.
Getting in touch is the easy part because they’ll call you over the phone.
Complaint 10- Decent Number of Customer Complaints on BBB
Goldco has gotten a decent number of BBB complaints and negative reviews over the years (accredited in 2011).
They’ve gotten 48 complaints in the last 3 years, and it seems like most of them have been resolved successfully and amicably between the customers in question and Goldco.
The fact that these complaints are all successfully resolved tells me (and you) that Goldco is a legitimate gold investment company.

Negative and bad reviews about Goldco exist, but I purposefully didn’t include them un my Goldco review.
Why?
Because a large chunk (not all of them) of them are fake reviews posted to harm Goldco’s reputation.
Remember that Goldco is a gold IRA company doing business in the gold IRA niche. Gold IRA niche is very competitive and unethical marketing practices are common among competitors. Posting fake customer reviews is one such tactic.
I’m not saying all of these bad reviews are fake, but it’s impossible to discern which negative reviews are real and which are fake, so I played it safe by including only positive testimonials here.
If you want to find online negative reviews and complaints about Goldco all you need to do is go to Google or Bing and search queries like “Goldco negative reviews” “Goldco negative review” “Goldco complaints”, “Goldco Direct complaints” “Goldco bad reviews”, “Goldco bad review” “Goldco Precious Metals complaints” and similar.

You can see how the company is quick to respond to customer complaints and do everything they can to solve them successfully. BBB-complaint-responsiveness is a hallmark of a legitimate business.
Here’s someone complaining on BBB that Goldco for some reason refused to send them the gold IRA info kit. Goldco successfully helped this person.
Here’s someone complaining on BBB that it took Goldco more than 4 months to deliver the silver coins they ordered. Goldco responded and successfully cleared the issued with this customer who’re now satisfied.

Hi Nikola, I’m thinking of ordering some gold from Goldco. Will they insure my package so it doesn’t get lost or stolen?
Hi Nurjanah,
yes Goldco insure all packages they send to customers (usually sent via FedEx)
According to them
I’m still quite frustrated by my experience trying to invest in precious metals with Goldco. I feel I wasn’t given enough upfront information or details before being asked to make decisions on what type of bullion to purchase. When I selected the category of bullion and then saw the invoice, I was caught completely off guard by the total cost it was much higher than I had anticipated.
When I tried asking questions to understand where these charges were coming from, the answers felt very rushed. The staff responded with all these math calculations that I simply didn’t grasp. It came across like they were talking down to me by showing off all this math rather than taking the time to clearly explain the costs. I know Goldco are not a scam gold IRA company, I’ve read enough honest customer reviews to know this. But still, I was left feeling condescended and confused, which was upsetting given the large investment I wanted to make to secure my future.
Hi Tony,
thank you for leaving your honest review of Goldco Precious Metals. Yeah, Goldco is not a scam. They’re a legit gold IRA company that does good work for their customers. However, they could always be better and one area of possible improvement is their customer service. The person you talked to obviously didn’t understand that you were a mere newbie looking for info.
